Pregnancy and Obstetric related Health Problems

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been helping pregnant women and postpartum recovery for over 3000 years naturally. Pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal recovery are also supported through Chinese Medicine and this helps enhance a woman's health and wellbeing. However, if a female doesn't take adequate care and listen to her body, these health issues can continue long after your precious bundle of joy is born. Value is therefore placed on promoting preventative care whilst pregnant and this helps to strengthen the mother and baby as well. By being proactive, it deals with problems as they occur during pregnancy and not when it is too late.  Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can be used in a variety of ways to promote foetal and maternal heath.

Nausea during Pregnancy

Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine is often very effective in reducing the constant nausea and vomitting felt whilst pregnant. Interestingly most often called, Morning Sickness, it is found that many women actually feel nauseous all day and sometimes into the night. This can be quite debilitating and uncomfortable especially when accompanied with dry retching.  Though help can be found when acupuncture is started as soon as the nausea is felt, thus lessoning the amount of nausea and vomitting.

Musculo-Skeletal Pain

Back pain, rib pain, sciatica and pubic symphis pain is quite common in pregnancy. Acupuncture can reduce and sometimes eliminate the pain associated with a growing belly and bub.

Hypertension - High Blood Pressure

Acupuncture can play an important role in reducing blood pressure whilst pregnant. Not only is it a natural way to reduce the blood pressure, it also highly effective when the blood pressure is first noticed. The effectiveness of acupuncture will be reflected in the improved blood pressure readings and blood test which midwives and specialists use to detect possible complications.  As high blood pressure has the potential to escalate quickly, ongoing medical monitoring remains essential throughout pregnancy.

Breech and Posterior Babies

Moxibustion is offered from 33 weeks gestation. Moxibustion has been researched and has demonstrated to be a safe and painless way of turning a breech baby.  Moxibustion can have a significant effect in helping turn breech babies and ideally treatment is given at 34-35 weeks gestation as the baby still has room to move.  However, it can still be used later in pregnancy. This technique can also help babies that are not in the optimal position prior to birth, such as those in a posterior position.

Labour Preparation and Induction

At 34 weeks, acupuncture can be started to prepare the pelvis, cervix and the muscles around the pelvis for birth.  This is followed by one treatment per week until labour begins. Acupuncture can be a gentle inducement to labour. Research has been shown to show that labour preparation with acupuncture has the potential for more efficient stages of labour.  It may also reduce the need for medical intervention.

Pain Relief During Labour

Acupuncture offers drug free alternatives for pain relief during labour. Acupressure provides similar results with the advantage that your support "staff" can use it during labour. Most often your partner feels useless whilst you are giving birth to your beautiful bub, by giving them an active role in the birthing process will help them to feel connected to you and the baby right from the start. Diana conducts Acupressure during Labour courses for you and your support "staff". Enquire today when the next course starts.
